Bookmaking and Painting in France-A Mixed Media Retreat!

La Cascade Retreat Center in Southern France

Join us in southern France at La Cascade for a week of art-making, wonderful food, inspirational field trips and new friendships. The region is rich with medieval villages,
artists, flea markets and fairs, which we will draw upon for inspiration and ephemera gathering. The wonderful weather, culture, wines and food of the Languedoc region make it a well-kept secret-you won’t find it overcrowded with tourists.
This spirited workshop will explore painting, painterly collage, easy printmaking techniques- all gathered into one wonderful handmade artist journal. Both Suzanne and Dayle will offer instructed studio time along with daily field trips for inspiration and treasure hunting. We’ll also work with polymer clay embellishments that “tell a story” inspired by French medieval village life, the Renaissance court and/or your imagination. We’ll go on location to capture photos for inspiration and then paint in the serenity of our surroundings- by the side of the river where the waterfalls run in this ancient village or in our studio. Be inspired to explore and create ideas of your choice- jewelry, small paintings, artist books, mixed media assemblage.
Fall into the rhythm of this historic hamlet where time seems to stand still and you can finally hear yourself think…and creativity flows.
The Workshop: Instructed Studio time, a delightful field trip everyday to artist studios, villages, a local monastery, flea markets, village events and Open Studio each night. Field trips are optional if you want to stay home and nap, work in the studio or explore on your own. Taste wonderful wines and local foods provided by our personal chef.
We’ll be based at the retreat center La Cascade, a beautifully restored stone house in the village of Durfort, one hour east of Toulouse. The village of Durfort has been making copper ware since the Middle Ages. Cathar castles, medieval villages, flea markets, fields of sunflowers await your exploration. The region is an hour and a half from the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean and a couple hours from Provence.
La Cascade: Bedrooms are double occupancy (two twin beds) with shared bathrooms. The beautiful art studio is located on the third floor of the house and is available to work in whenever you want. Living room, dining room and a large outside terrace that goes down to the river are part of our home.
Workshop price of $2500 ($2300 if you reserve before November 15, 2011) includes:

Suzanne Jenne is an award-winning painter and mixed media artist who has been creating for over 20 years. She lives in Colorado and has produced and participated in scores of art shows and creative events. She has a passion for nature, food, wine and French culture, especially after living in the South of France 35 years ago. Suzanne’s workshops are lively, fun and insightful. Dayle Doroshow is a mixed media/polymer clay artist and owner of design studio ZINGARO, Stamp of Distinction. She trained in traditional ceramics in NYC and sold her pottery there. In recent years she has emerged as an innovator in polymer clay and has won numerous awards for her work. She has been featured in several books on polymer clay, alternative photography and collage. Her jewelry, home décor, handmade books and art dolls can be found in galleries and art shows on the West Coast.
